do you have any friends that are on their phones CONSTANTLY?? maybe you are that friend.
a friend of mine decided to go on a social media swipe for a week, and this is day two and she said that she has accomplished more in two days that she has in two weeks. she gets assignments done faster, she reads her bible more often, she finds herself in prayer more often than when she is on her phone checking Facebook every ten seconds. and i, personally, am finding that really inspiring. i'm not going on a social media sweep but i really don't use my phone for social media that much. i barely text or call people, i am rarely on Facebook on my phone, or tweet things for hours. i'm not saying that i am perfect and don't need some sweeping of the social media, because i do.i get distracted so easily.
it takes me a while to write something down without thinking of something else and i never usually get back to it right away. when was the last time you gave a friend your undivided attention while they were talking? our society is constantly coming out with the next new thing, whether it is a tablet, iPad, or smart phone. When was the last time you didn't have your phone out during a meal and was on it the whole time? when was the last time you actually held a conversation at lunch or at dinner with your family (or friends since we are at college)? I have to really think about this because someone is always on their phone. Facebooking, Tweeting, Instagramming, Vining?, and so much more. Youtube. Tumblr. I'm not all up to date on the media sites that are hipster and cool.i recently found this really cool app that actually helps you not touch your phone and it does the world some good. have you ever heard of UNICEF??
(photo credit goes to UNICEF)i'm assuming that most people know what UNICEF is and what they are about but for those of you that aren't aware, UNICEF is a non-profit organization that works in more than 190 countries and territories to save and improve children's lives by providing more than 190 countries and territories to save and improve children's lives by providing health care and immunizations, clean water and sanitation, nutrition, education, emergency relief and more. The U.S. Fund for UNICEF supports UNICEF’s work through fundraising, advocacy and education in the United States and education in the United States. Well their latest project is called the Tap Project and I think it relates to what i'm talking about.
many children go days without good sanitary water, how long do you go without your phone? this project is really cool actually. you go to: tap.unicefusa.org and you put your phone on stable ground and you leave it, don't touch it or move it. I know, you must be crazy to go without touching your phone for large amounts of time. But you can do it. Do it for the kids that don't have water or food.
here are some things you can do with that time:
1. read a book.
2. watch a movie.
3. take a camera and go take pictures of god's beautiful creation.
4. take a nap.
5. actually do your homework.
6. gather some friends and throw around a Frisbee or football.
7. have a dance party with a couple friends.
8. write in your journal.
9. do your taxes.
10. pray.
11. go to the local nursing home and read to the elderly.
12. bake something.
13. do your hair.
14. do your nails.
15. catch up on your latest TV show that you love dearly.
16. hang out with your best friend and talk about nothing.
the possibilities are endless.
I DARE YOU.
put that phone down, and live a little.
